Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) focuses on the unique and exceptional needs of mothers-to-be and their unborn children. MFM is staffed by perinatologists who are obstetricians with specialized training, and our registered nurses have experience in labour and delivery, neonatal intensive care, and postpartum care.

Our Maternal Fetal Medicine clinics offer the following services:

  • First-trimester screening
  • 18 to 20 week anatomic scan
  • Amniocentesis
  • Chorionic Villous Sampling (CVS)
  • Fetal assessment.

How do I prepare for my exam?

Please arrive 30 (First Trimester Screen and CVS) minutes prior to your appointment time to complete the check-in process and any necessary paperwork.

1st Trimester - 13 weeks and less

Drink four 8-ounce glasses of water (patients under 80 lbs. and Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) patients drink only two 8-ounce glasses) completed one hour before your appointment. Do not empty your bladder until the exam is completed. If absolutely necessary, your bladder may be partially emptied.

2nd or 3rd Trimester - 14 weeks and up

28 weeks and less - Drink two 8-ounce glasses of water one hour prior to appointment. Do not empty your bladder until the exam is completed. If absolutely necessary, your bladder may be partially emptied.

Beyond 28 weeks, you do not have to fill your bladder, and we recommend you eat 30 minutes prior to your appointment.

Detailed, 2nd or 3rd Trimester - 14 weeks and up

How do I prepare for my exams?

Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your appointment time to complete the check-in process and any necessary paperwork. This appointment can be approximately 2 hours.

Please plan to be in the clinic for 1.5 - 2 hours for this appointment.

For the blood work required for your Nuchal examination: Your blood can be drawn any time after your 11th week and up to 3 business days before your Nuchal appointment.
