Private Diagnostic Imaging Program Update

The Government of Alberta has announced a new Private Diagnostic Imaging Program, which is expected to launch on August 1, 2027. The program is intended to provide eligible Albertans with additional options for accessing select diagnostic imaging services through approved community providers, including self-referred and private pay services*. EFW Radiology remains committed to providing publicly funded diagnostic imaging services. Our review of the Government’s Private Diagnostic Imaging Program does not affect our existing services, and all scheduled and future appointments will proceed as usual.

As additional information becomes available, Alberta Health is providing community imaging clinics with details regarding participation requirements, patient eligibility, operational expectations, and implementation timelines.

EFW Radiology is actively reviewing the program and will continue to provide updates as new information is released.

*Self-referred services are diagnostic imaging services requested directly by a patient, without a requisition or referral from a healthcare provider.

EFW Radiology participation status: Under Review

EFW Radiology is reviewing the program and assessing the operational requirements for participation.

At this time, EFW Radiology is not accepting self-referred bookings under the new Private Diagnostic Imaging Program. Patients may continue to book a private MRI with a requisition from their referring healthcare provider.

What This Means for Patients

Patients can be assured that EFW Radiology will continue delivering publicly funded diagnostic imaging services as usual. Our review of the Private Diagnostic Imaging Program has no impact on existing services, scheduled appointments, or future appointments.

EFW Radiology is closely monitoring the implementation of the Government of Alberta’s Private Diagnostic Imaging Program. As additional information becomes available, we will provide timely updates regarding our participation and any impact on patients.

In the meantime, patients may continue to book services with a referral from their healthcare provider or self-refer for screening mammograms (click here for eligibility criteria). If you have questions about obtaining a service requisition, please contact your healthcare provider directly. If you do not have a healthcare provider, a walk-in clinic may be able to assist you in obtaining a requisition, if appropriate.
